A professor can be intimidating and it can be difficult to go to their office hours, even though they are there to help! Those few hours that they keep open for students is a great tool for success in their class. When your professor can put a name to your face it can be extremely helpful in the future. They will be more inclined to help you out when they know who you are. As well, if you plan on applying to grad school, being known to your professor is very helpful.
If the professor knows you on a first name basis, their letter of recommendation for future endeavours will be better. If you present yourself as a keen student wanting to learn they will only appreciate that. Professor’s want you to succeed just as much as you do, so when you try hard and ask questions they will be more inclined to help you in the future.
5 Ways to Get the Most Out of Office Hours
Here are 5 great ways to effectively use your professor’s office hours
#1) Introduce Yourself
Make yourself known to your professor. When they can a put a name to a face it makes it easier for them to be more personable with you! Let them know why you’re taking their course and what you are excited about this semester.
#2) Bring a Really Good Question
During the semester, there will be difficult concepts and topics that you may need help with. Have a running list of questions such as the one I wrote about in 6 Tips to Help You Ace That Anatomy Class
Try to answer your own questions first to develop a better understanding, and then if you are still feeling confused go to your professor. They will be more than happy to help you out.
#3) Ask About Their Research
If your professor is doing research, this is a great opportunity to show interest in their field. Research looks great on grad school applications, and you could potentially help out a professor with theirs! Don’t be afraid to talk to them. They will be more than willing to discuss their interests and backgrounds academically with you if you take the initiative.
#4) Make Yourself Known
Be consistent. Don’t go to the office hours once and think that they will remember you. Schedule it in to your planner to make a constant effort to be known to your professors. They have hundreds of students and a one time meeting won’t help them to recognize and remember you. Saying that, a great time to start is the first week though! Check out my post on what you can do to get ahead during the first week here First Week- How To Get Ahead
#5) Be a Great Student
Be engaged in class and be eager to learn. Professor’s recognize good behaviour and are more likely to help you out if you are trying really hard. Show up to class, be an active learner, ask valuable questions, and ask for help when you need it. Professor’s are there to help you, so take advantage of the tools they provide.
I hope everyone has a great semester, and are as excited for school to begin as I am!
